Thousands of dogs await to be adopted in shelters around the world. Many of these dogs end up living their entire lives in the kennel, not knowing what it feels like to be loved and be part of a forever home, which is why it is always wise to adopt pets than to shop for one.
Some of the luckier dogs are featured in this story by Hope For Paws, an animal rescue organization founded by Eldad Hagar, aiming to keep animals off the streets and into loving forever homes. The dog, a black homeless female named Mama Bear, had just recently given birth.
Eldad was called about Mama Bear when concerned people saw her begging for scraps of food in the neighborhood. From her looks, it was clear that she recently had puppies, but no one knew where they were.
When Eldad arrived at the area the dog was seen, he saw Mama Bear being fed by locals. He asked if they know where her puppies were, but they had no clue. Eldad hoped that after Mama Bear finished eating, she would lead him back to her puppies. But it was clear she wasn’t going anywhere.
Eldad decided to play puppy noises, hoping that Mama Bear will feel nervous, and run back to her litter. But even the sound of puppies crying was not going to get her to move. She only seemed confused as she curiously watched Eldad’s phone.
Eldad knew he was going to have to wait several hours before Mama Bear will go back to her puppies. It was already dark when Mama Bear finally moved out. Eldad tracked her down, leading him to a nearby bridge. Two dogs were barking in the distance, which Eldad wisely followed.
Eldad finally found Mama Bear, but she was barking at him. Not knowing how Mama Bear would react to him being in her territory, Eldad picked up a stick he can use to defend himself.
As he approached the dog, Eldad realized that he had come upon a homeless camp. Homeless people have made camp under the bridge. There, he met Tim. According to Tim, the dog’s owner was not there at the time, and so Eldad decided to come back the next day as he didn’t want to take the dogs without the owner’s permission.
The next day, Eldad returned to the camp together with his team of rescuers. There, they met Buzz, the dogs’ owner. Eldad asked Buzz if they could help take care of the dogs for him. He knew that Buzz would not be able to provide for the needs of the dogs considering he was homeless. Buzz was a good guy, and he understood that giving the dogs to the rescue shelter was the dogs’ best chance at a better life.
Eldad and his team started taking the puppies to the car. Buzz did the honor of putting on the leash on Mama Bear as he said his final goodbye to his companion. From a distance, Eldad could see that Buzz was teary-eyed as he encouraged the dog to go with the rescue team.
Mama Bear was hesitant to leave his side, so Buzz picked her up and carried her to the car himself. It was clear that Buzz loved Mama Bear, but he knew they deserved better. It was an emotional way of letting go of his best friend, but he understood that it had to be done. Before they left, Eldad gave Buzz some pocket money to help him take care of his other dog, Papa Bear.
Back in the shelter, the dogs were given a well-deserved bath and food. They were then taken to their foster family, where they lived a happy life until they are ready for adoption.
