Walking a dog might sound easy, and it should be. However, it’s the most common thing about dog ownership that a lot of people have problems with. Sometimes people hire dog trainers to help them understand how to properly walk their dog.
Jennifer has trouble with her dog, Roxy, during walks. The little bulldog gets aggressive when they encounter other dogs. Jennifer has been using a spray collar to keep her dog under control, but recently it seems Roxy is getting desensitized to it.
Victoria Stilwell demonstrated to Jennifer how positive reinforcement can work better. Every time another dog walks by, she distracts Roxy with a treat. The dog is now focused on tasting and smelling instead of becoming aggressive.
Jennifer also has some problems with her body language and how she conducts herself around her dog. Victoria believes this might be adding to the problem. The dog trainer doesn’t stop there. She also gave Jennifer a new collar to work with.
The training continues, and Victoria teaches Jennifer how to distract Roxy by getting in front of her. Jennifer must learn to grab Roxy’s attention as soon as she sees other dogs are approaching. The dog trainer left for a while to see if she does well.
After Victoria left, Jennifer made a few mistakes. She didn’t use the chest collar, and she made her daughter do a lot of the distracting methods instead of her. Victoria came back to correct Jennifer’s errors.
After several more rounds of training with other dogs, Roxy learned how to socialize properly. Jennifer couldn’t believe what was happening in front of her. Roxy was sniffing other dog’s butts, which is a good sign of socialization. This is yet another proof of how positive reinforcement training works.
