Watch This Dog Redirect His Energy Into Something More Productive

Watch This Dog Redirect His Energy Into Something More Productive

Scott Fannin March 31, 2020

A hyperactive dog can be tough to handle. They can become dangerous if the issue is not addressed properly. Indiana is an example of a hyperactive dog that’s causing a lot of problems for his owner. Victoria Stilwell, the dog trainer, is going to have a hard time training this one.

Karen owns Indiana, and she is out of ideas on how to keep her dog from jumping and biting. When Victoria saw how Indiana behaved, she was immediately concerned. Victoria started by telling Karen the consequences that might happen if Indiana is kept in check.

Turning away from Indiana and using an item to block her bites doesn’t calm him down. However, the trainer is successful when it comes to positive reinforcement training methods. Still, Indiana has very poor impulse control.

Victoria made sure to remind Karen to use toys to keep Indiana distracted. She also demonstrated a technique in which she held out a treat and waited until Indiana calmed down before trying to get it. The next step was to bring Indiana to a special training facility.

Victoria brought Karen and his family to a training facility catering to detection dogs. Dogs that go through here are trained to detect explosives, drugs, and other things. The goal is to see what activity suits Indiana best.

The trainers demonstrate how their dogs can find hidden objects. Karen and her family are amazed to see the display of skill. Then it was time for Indiana to see what he can do.

They discovered that Indiana has a lot of prey drive, which helps him chase objects with focus. However, finding objects is a different story. He gets too distracted.

Finally, the dog trainers suggested to the owners a simple game. They gave the owners something called a narc bag. They can put anything inside, throw it and have Indiana retrieve it. It’s the perfect game for an energetic dog like him.
