How A Dog From A Kill Shelter Became a Scruffy Movie Star

How A Dog From A Kill Shelter Became a Scruffy Movie Star

Scott Fannin March 29, 2020

Did you ever wander about the history of the dog from “Lady and the Tramp that played Tramp? These days, most people know Monty as a full-blown celebrity dog who starred in the “Lady and the Tramp” remake. However, not everyone knows that months before this scruffy mutt with enchanting eyes became a Disney movie star, he lived a far less glamorous life.

Monty did not come from a canine acting dynasty. He has his muzzle in a silver bowl at birth too. Not too long ago, Monty waited in a kill shelter’s cage in New Mexico for a family to adopt him before his time runs out. Luckily, HALO Animal Rescue pulled Monty from the shelter.

This no-kill shelter from Phoenix, Arizona, looked after Monty until they found a perfect owner for him. That fur parent was an experienced animal trainer named Mark Forbes. Mark has worked with numerous animal actors besides the dog from Lady and the Tramp in many different films. At that time, aside from looking for a new companion, Mark was also searching for a charming star.

Each day, Mark would spend time looking for a suitable dog among the thousands that are available for adoption in the country’s shelters. The “Lady and the Tramp” remake producer, Brigham Taylor, wanted the film’s principal actors to be a real pooch. He believed that nothing could replace the reaction that people get upon staring into the eyes of an actual pup. And, that dog should be a rescue.

This led to Monty’s adoption. Mark, together with his fellow Birds and Animals Unlimited trainers, trained Monty and many other dogs. Monty was probably around eight months old when Mark adopted him. Although Mark knows that all dogs are trainable, he found it especially enjoyable to work with Monty. This was because this pup has such goofy energy.

Because of Monty’s sweet and playful demeanor, he quickly transformed from an ordinary dog into the Tramp that many people would surely love to see. Now, the shelter dog is not only a movie star. He became BFFs with Justin Theroux too.
